Top 5 Wednesday

Over on YouTube, there is a Top 5 Wednesday family, where a large community of people answer different Top 5s each week. It was started by Lainey (gingerreadslainey) and I’ve been watching a number of the videos every Wednesday so I thought I’d participate over here on my blog!

This week’s Top 5 is books I struggled with, but ultimately ended up finishing!

5. Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

I read the entire Hunger Games trilogy back-to-back, and after loving the two first books, I was incredibly bored by the final book. The politics were confusing and dry, and did not make a good or satisfying conclusion to what had been such a strong trilogy. I had blasted through both ‘Hunger Games’ and ‘Catching Fire’ in just over a week, but it took nearly two to struggle through ‘Mockingjay’. I have no earthly idea how they are going to get enough material to make it into two movies.

4. The World Is Moving Around Me by Dany Laferierre

This is a book that was on the syllabus for one of my English Literature courses in my third year of university. It’s not that I didn’t enjoy this book, I just found myself stumbling over the bluntness of the narrative and the subject matter. In the end, I finished the book but I don’t think I got very much out of it, and I avoided writing about it in a final exam.

3. The Chrysalids by John Wyndham

I really, really disliked this book. I read it in Grade 10 for my English class, and I believe my dislike of this book stemmed from the dislike of my teacher and the way she taught, so maybe I should re-read it on my own now that I’m older… but probably not. Personally, I found the premise confusing at the time and didn’t find the characters interesting or engaging.

2. The Golden Compass by Phillip Pullman

Another book read for school – this one all the way back in Grade 6. I was having such a hard time getting through it that I had to lock myself in my room with no other distractions in order to force myself to read. It was the very first time I ever had to force myself to read a book.

1. The Bookstore by Deborah Meyler

I. Hated. This. Book. I generally have spot on judgment with books I buy, and I tend to enjoy them, at least marginally. But for this book, I made the mistake of purchasing a book based on the title and boy was that a mistake. I won’t bother reiterating how much I disliked it, so if you feel like reading more of my thoughts about it, you can check my review out here.

Have a good Wednesday, and happy reading!

Summer Viewing

Summer is, of course, the perfect time to catch up on shows or to make time to watch those that you’ve been meaning to watch through the year. Now that it’s June and I’m settled into my two jobs and my lack of school, I finally have time to catch up on the shows I fell behind in during the school year, watch those that I’ve be meaning to for a long time, and rewatching some of my favourite shows, either in preparation for the new season or to reminisce shows that have long been cancelled.

Without further ado, here are the shows I plan to watch this summer!

This week’s Top 5 is characters I wish I was more like!

I also decided that any time there’s a good crossover Top5W topic, I’m going to answer it for books as well as television shows! This is one of them!

The TV of 2014 – 2015

Although I am still in mourning for the shows I loved that fell victim to the 2014 cancellation spree (RIP Trophy Wife, Enlisted, Community and Revolution, most notably), and I will be writing a piece about that soon, I wanted to go through the teaser videos of the pilots from the major networks that were announced during Upfronts season and give my inital thoughts.

Click on the name of the network to get the rundown of the shows!
